A world first – an all Damascus steel sports watch by Paul Dupuis

The DMS|001 by Paul Dupuis is an impressive bit of kit. It’s here to shake up the modern sports watch sector at a very affordable price point with no compromise on quality. Hand-assembled in Britain and powered by the Swiss ETA 2824 automatic workhorse; it’s not messing around.

Firstly, there is no denying the recognizable shape of the DMS|001; however, the team at Paul Dupuis does not shy away from this. They want to deliver a quality modern tonneau-shaped piece that is actually obtainable by people who aren’t in a position to spend tens of thousands. If you admire brands like Franck Muller, Richard Mille, and Hublot then Paul Dupuis will be right up your street. Although the shape is recognizable, the rest of the watch is anything but and boasts some fantastic unique features. The founder, Paul Hayes, is from a watch designing background and has a real eye for creativity and attention to detail, which very much comes through in the DMS|001. “Quality tonneau watches cost upwards of $20,000 (USD), and just aren’t that obtainable by most. If you don’t’ care too much about quality, you can pick up some cheaper alternatives. I do care about quality though so wanted to fill the gap in the market and deliver an affordable range with no compromises”.

It’s taken Paul over 2 years to deliver the DMS|001. The design process and sourcing of quality components hasn’t been an easy one but “if something’s worth doing, it’s worth doing right”, as Paul says.

A watchmaking family

Although you won’t find him in the history books, Paul Dupuis was actually a real person and a member of Paul’s (the founder) family. He was a watch fanatic and actually made movements, over 100 years ago. It was just a hobby and never turned into a real business. Paul now wants to honor his legacy and bring the Dupuis name into the limelight.

DMS|001 features

As mentioned, the DMS|001 does not hold back on the feature list and for the price point it is an impressive timepiece:

Hand assembly in the UK– each component is checked by Paul and the team and then hand-assembled in Britain. It’s the only way they can guarantee their high expectations on the quality of their pieces.

Customized Swiss ETA 2824 movement– known for its reliability and performance, the Swiss made ETA 2824 was an obvious choice for the team. They took it a step further though with a few key customizations on the date wheel and rotor.

Custom forged Japanese Damascus steel case– the Damascus steel used in the DMS|001 is custom forged in Japan for Paul Dupuis. It is harder than regular steel and gives a unique and rather beautiful finish. In fact, every single piece is different, so no two watches are the same. They are also PVD coated to give additional scratch resistance and durability.

3 anti-reflective sapphire crystal screens– there was no other choice of material for the screen, the Paul Dupuis team said; however, they took it a step further. The front and back displays are custom milled for the watch shape and there is also a third screen that acts as the actual dial. This is great attention to detail and allows you to see the movement through the dial in a subtle way that doesn’t distract from the face itself.

Swiss Super-LumiNova– the hand ends are all coating in Swiss Super-LumiNova meaning you have no trouble seeing the time in the dark.

Carbon fiber movement protection– being a sports watch, the Paul Dupuis team wanted to add extra protection to the movement so created a unique carbon fiber protection plate. It’s not only practical but looks amazing through the back of the watch.

100M water resistance– the screws on the front and back of the case don’t just look great, they’re also the key to obtaining this level of water resistance on such a tonneau shape. The crown is also screw-down to give additional resistance to the elements. Again, highlights the attention to detail the team has given this watch.

Custom silicon strap– the custom strap has been designed to flow off the curvature of the case, making it extremely comfortable on pretty much any wrist size. The silicon itself is very soft yet feels extremely durable. There are several finishes from matte black to different colored camo effects, which adds to the sporty feel.

Watch winder case– this is something you don’t see often as standard. Paul was adamant that the DMS|001 had to always be ready when the wearer was. Even with a 40-hour power reserve, he took it a step further and is giving each watch buyer a watch winder, so your timepiece fits in with your active lifestyle. These winders usually cost over $200 USD so it’s a great addition.

Dimensions– the dimensions allow for most wrist sizes and shapes. the case width is 41.5 mm and has a height of 50.5 mm. At its deepest, it has a depth of 13 mm and this tapers slightly toward the lugs.

Limited edition plaque– Each DMS|001 style is limited to 500 pieces and the unique number of your watch is proudly displayed on a Damascus steel plaque on the watch faces.
